The plane game where the plane is a real one

Every round of this plane game starts with a single aircraft. It has a type, an altitude, a ground speed and a heading it has been holding, and it is in the air right now. What it does not have, as far as you are concerned, is a destination. Finding that is the game.

Learn the airframes and the map gets smaller

Aircraft type is the first filter and the most useful one. Regional jets and turboprops fly short. Narrowbodies fly medium, with a handful of long-range variants that break the rule and catch you out. Widebodies fly the long stuff, and freighters fly whatever nobody else wants to at four in the morning.

Get the type right in your head and half the map disappears before you have looked at the heading. That is why the boarding pass leads with a silhouette.

Then the numbers finish the job

Altitude places the aircraft in its flight profile. Low and climbing means the origin is nearby and the destination probably is too. High and steady means you are somewhere in the middle of a long leg with the most information and the least certainty.

Ground speed adds the wind. A narrowbody doing 560 knots over the ground is riding a jet stream east; the same airframe doing 380 is fighting one westbound. It is a small clue and it separates near-identical rounds.

Hints exist, and they cost you

Two hints are available in a round. The first reveals the departure airport, which usually collapses the problem to a handful of candidates. The second draws the trail the aircraft has actually flown, which turns a heading into a curve and often gives away the answer outright.

Both are there for the rounds that are genuinely unreadable, and both are worth resisting when the round is merely hard.

The reveal is where the learning happens

When the clock stops, the camera pulls back and draws the real route from origin to destination, with your pin sitting wherever you left it. That single image is usually enough to tell you which part of your reasoning failed: the airframe was fine but the heading was read as a straight line, or the geometry was right and you picked the smaller of two airports.

Rounds you get wrong are worth more than rounds you get right, because a miss names the gap. After a few dozen of them the same handful of mistakes stop happening, and the plane game stops being a guess and starts being a read.
