Most guessing games generate a puzzle. This one collects one. Aircraft broadcast their position over ADS-B, an open transponder feed that anyone with a receiver can pick up, and AviationGuesser pulls from that feed continuously. The plane in your round has a tail number, an operator and a flight plan filed by a real crew.
That matters for the guessing, because a fabricated route can be anything and a real route almost never is. Airlines fly hubs. Freighters fly at night. A widebody at 38,000 feet over the North Atlantic on a westbound heading has maybe six plausible endings, and knowing that is the whole skill.
What you actually get to work with
Each round opens with a boarding pass rather than a label. It carries the aircraft type, current altitude, ground speed and compass heading, plus a silhouette of the airframe. The map shows where the plane is and nothing about where it came from, unless you spend a hint on the origin airport.
- Aircraft type - an A320 is not crossing an ocean, a 777F almost certainly is
- Altitude - still climbing, cruising, or already stepping down for arrival
- Ground speed - separates a jet on a long leg from a turboprop on a short one
- Heading - project it forward along a great circle and see what it runs into
- Hints - burn one for the departure airport, another for the flown trail
Scoring rewards the near miss, not just the bullseye
A perfect call pays 5,000 points. Everything else pays on a curve against how far your pin sat from the real airport, so guessing the right city and missing the right runway still banks most of the purse, and guessing the right continent still counts for something. Speed adds to it. Sitting on a guess costs you.
Points roll into a logbook and into experience, experience into levels, levels into lounge status that starts at an economy bench and ends somewhere considerably nicer. The world leaderboard runs on accumulated points, so consistency beats one lucky direct hit.
Frequently asked questions
Is the flight guesser free to play?
Yes. Quick Play, the daily challenge and the leaderboard are free with an account. A Pro membership at 19 dollars a year removes the daily flight cap and unlocks charters, practice replays and extended stats, but nothing about the core game is paywalled.
Do I need to know anything about aviation to play?
No. The first few rounds teach you what altitude and heading are telling you, and distance-based scoring means a rough guess still pays. Regular players pick up hub geography and aircraft ranges without studying anything.
Where does the flight data come from?
ADS-B transponder broadcasts, aggregated by open community receiver networks. Flights are collected nightly and served from storage, with a live scan as fallback, so the traffic you guess against is the traffic that actually flew.
Can I play a flight guesser on my phone?
Yes. It runs in the browser on phones, tablets and desktops with no install, and your logbook, badges and streak follow the account across every device.
